Bonjour — excellente journée à tous ☀️ 🙌

Gregoire Gauthier@gregoireandreard·

Long-term capital is not built on the deal that looks perfect in the spreadsheet. It is built on the decisions you refuse to make when the spreadsheet looks too good. I have spent years in private equity, sitting across the table from founders, family offices, and institutional partners. The most striking pattern is not the winners. It is how often the near-perfect opportunity—the one with the cleanest projections, the most polished management deck, the most aggressive exit timeline—turns out to be the one that quietly erodes trust. Why? Because premium clients do not buy a return. They buy a relationship with risk. And risk is not a number. It is a behavior. What affluent clients notice before they say a word In Lyon, where discretion is a cultural value as much as a financial one, I have learned that the first signal of quality is not the size of the mandate. It is the quality of the questions we ask. A client who asks about liquidity in year three is not being difficult. They are testing whether we understand that capital is a living thing, not a static allocation. A client who asks about the governance of the operating partner is not being paranoid. They are testing whether we have seen what happens when incentives misalign. These signals are early. They are subtle. And they separate the advisors who simply place capital from those who steward it. The discipline of saying no In private equity, the hardest work is not sourcing. It is filtering. The market in 2025 is full of assets that look attractive on paper—low multiples, strong historical growth, a compelling narrative. But the real question is always the same: what does this asset look like in a downturn, under a new management team, with a different interest rate environment? I have walked away from deals that would have generated strong fees. I have also walked away from deals that would have generated strong returns—because the governance structure was not aligned with the client's long-term interests. That is not a heroic stance. It is the baseline of the job. Clients do not always thank you in the moment. But they remember. And in a world where capital flows to trust, memory is the only real currency. The Lyon advantage Lyon is not Paris. It is a city of engineers, of family businesses, of quiet wealth built over generations. The clients here do not need to be impressed. They need to be understood. They value a partner who knows the difference between a good quarter and a good decade. They value a partner who can explain why a particular credit line is structured the way it is, or why a certain macro trend matters more to their portfolio than the latest headline. That is why I focus on the long arc: capital stewardship, risk discipline, and the kind of trust that only comes from repeated, consistent judgment. What I tell every new client Wealth management is not about being right. It is about being reliable. The market will test you. The cycle will test you. Your own emotions will test you. The only thing that holds is the quality of the relationship you build before the test arrives. So when I meet a new client in Lyon, I do not start with a product. I start with a conversation about what they are protecting, what they are building, and what they are afraid of losing. That is where the real work begins. If you are an affluent investor or a family office looking for a partner who thinks in decades, not quarters, I would welcome the conversation. Keywords: private equity Lyon, wealth management, capital stewardship, premium client advisory, risk discipline, family office, trust-based investing.
